Soccer
There are 2 soccer clubs in the parish - both are very active and
have teams at senior and junior levels.
Ballinlough is represented by Lough
Harps - a team that has been on the go since 1973.
Cloonfad has it's own club - Cloonfad United (their
website seems to have disappeared!).
Cloonfad United recently won the Roscommon Senior
Cup by beating local rivals Castlerea Celtic 2 - 1 in Ballinlough
(At the Lough Harps ground) This report taken from the Western People....
"Cloonfad United retained the Roscommon
Cup with a 2-1 win over Castlerea Celtic in Ballinlough last Sunday.
The match was scoreless at the interval but an injury to Castlerea
goalie (and Roscommon U-21 GAA keeper) Geoffrey Claffey had a major
impact on the game. Castlerea went ahead with a goal from Damien
Webb but Cloonfad equalised a minute later when David Bermingham
found the net. A cross from P.J. Keenan in the 73rd minute was finished
home by Aidan Keadin and this proved the clincher. The team was
captained by Declan Costello who played a major role in steering
his team to success again. There were major celebrations in Cloonfad
on Sunday evening when the victorious team arrived home in the village.
Congrats, Cloonfad. "
